Yelp now uses AI to make short videos about restaurants

Yelp is now using artificial intelligence (AI) to turn user reviews, photos, and videos into short clips that highlight restaurants, bars, and nightlife spots. These videos are now available across the U.S. on Yelp’s iPhone app, showing up in a TikTok-style scrolling feed.

Yelp first tested this idea last year, and now it’s rolling it out more widely. Businesses can’t currently see the videos made about them, and users can’t choose to keep their content out of these AI-made clips.

To create the videos, Yelp uses different AI tools. One writes the script, another provides the voice, and another adds captions to match. The final video blends photos, videos, and a voiceover talking about the food, drinks, and vibe of the place.

Yelp says it will only make videos for businesses that have enough content to tell a good story. While the videos are the same for everyone, Yelp uses your activity on the app to decide when to show them to you. There’s only one video live for each business at a time, and Yelp updates them over time.

If a video seems wrong or inappropriate, users or businesses can report it by clicking the three dots in the corner. Yelp also regularly checks the videos to make sure they meet its standards.

These new videos are part of Yelp’s bigger plan to use AI more, like in its review summaries and filters.
