Instagram adds live location sharing to DMs

Instagram is enhancing its direct messaging system with new features aimed at making meetups and communication more seamless. Users can now share their real-time location with friends through DMs for up to 60 minutes, making it easier to coordinate at events, concerts, and social gatherings.

The temporary location sharing feature operates within private direct messages, functioning in both individual and group conversations with the privacy setting turned off by default. While similar to Snapchat's SnapMap functionality, Instagram's version focuses on individual sharing without providing an overview map of all contacts' locations. Currently, these features are being rolled out in selected regions.

The platform has introduced personalization options that allow users to create nicknames for themselves and friends within specific chat conversations. Users maintain control over their nicknames, with the ability to prevent others from changing them. These custom names remain visible only within designated chat threads.

The messaging experience has been further enhanced with the addition of 17 new sticker collections, bringing more than 300 fresh designs to conversations. Users can now mark their favorite stickers from friends, reuse them in chats, and even create custom stickers using the cutout feature or AI generation tools.

Instagram's strategic focus on messaging is evident from recent statements by platform head Adam Mosseri, who noted that users engage more frequently with messages than content creation. This insight has led to testing a redesigned interface that positions the chat icon centrally at the bottom of the application.
