ESA achieves first direct 5G connection with low Earth orbit satellite

A groundbreaking technological achievement has been realized as the European Space Agency (ESA) and Telesat successfully established the world's first direct 5G connection with a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. This advancement brings space-based communications closer to the simplicity of mobile phone usage.
The breakthrough demonstration took place at ESA's 5G/6G laboratory within the European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands. Using Amarisoft's 5G technology, the team maintained a stable connection with Telesat's LEO 3 satellite throughout its orbital pass, from horizon to peak elevation at 38 degrees.
This innovative connection utilizes standardized 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology in the Ka-band frequency range. The implementation of open standards, developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), represents a significant shift from proprietary systems, potentially enabling direct satellite connections for mobile devices.
The implications of this technology span multiple sectors, from enabling remote healthcare services to supporting disaster response teams. The system promises to provide continuous coverage across urban and remote locations, offering seamless transitions between ground-based networks and satellites.
