Anticipating this shift, Band of Coders expanded its design capabilities by acquiring Toolbox No. 9: a firm well-known for its UX and design expertise. Seven years ago, Band of Coders helped ExamMed launch a pioneering telehealth platform. Since then, the technology landscape has transformed—and so have we. Here's how we'd reimagine key parts of the ExamMed solution using today's most powerful tools.

1. Cloud-Native Infrastructure: Built for Scalability

• Then:

At the time of this project, cloud services were just starting to gain traction. We created the ExamMed platform using traditional server environments, with all scaling and updates done manually. While the infrastructure we set up was reliable and accomplished its purpose, it required hands-on maintenance and didn’t allow for much elasticity (the ability to expand or compress based on current demand) during periods of high usage.

• Now:

Today, we’d build ExamMed as a cloud-native application (on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), using:

• Kubernetes for containerized app deployment and scalability
• CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, code integration, and launches with zero downtime
• Serverless architecture to simplify infrastructure management
• Elastic compute services and function-as-a-service (FaaS) to handle spikes in traffic (such as flu season surges) without overprovisioning
• Real-time monitoring tools, like Datadog or New Relic, can proactively detect and resolve performance issues.

Impact: Smoother launches, easier maintenance, and a truly scalable platform ready for effortless growth.

2. AI-Powered Features: Smarter Care, Less Admin

• Then:

The original build focused on a few key features: live video, scheduling, and provider-patient interaction. The platform was largely manual, meaning that appointment booking, follow-ups, and support were all done directly by the people using the platform.

• Now:

AI is no longer a science fiction trope: it’s a reality. Today, we’d improve ExamMed through intelligent automation, including:

• AI-driven scheduling to automatch patients with providers based on availability and specialties
• Chatbots to handle intake forms, common questions, and triage
• Predictive analytics to anticipate patient no-shows or recommend follow-up care
• Voice-to-text transcription to document video calls and save clinicians' time

3. AI-Powered Development: Accelerated Build

Then:
Seven years ago, software development was entirely manual, whether you were writing code, debugging, or documenting. Even when following best practices, iteration cycles were slower than today, and scaling teams required more overhead.

Now:
Since then, the development process has changed radically. AI tools like GitHub Copilot, Roo Code (VS Code extension), Cursor, and ChatGPT speed up engineering workflows—supporting faster code generation, refactoring, documentation, and more. This leads to:
