Roblox rolls out instant AI chat translation tool

Roblox has developed an AI model designed to translate text chats swiftly, aiming to seamlessly bridge language barriers among its users. The translation feature supports 16 languages, including English, French, Japanese, Thai, Polish, and Vietnamese.

According to Dan Sturman, Roblox's CTO, the objective is to foster a more inclusive environment where users can communicate comfortably with each other. The translator automatically converts chats, although users have the option to view the original message by clicking an icon.

To achieve this, Roblox employed a transformer-based large language model (LLM) integrated into a mixture of experts (MoE) architecture. This innovative approach allows multiple translation apps to operate within the same environment, each specializing in a specific language. By doing so, Roblox streamlines resources without the need to develop separate LLMs for each language.

Sturman emphasized that Roblox closely monitors chats for trust and safety purposes and welcomes feedback to refine translations. The addition of the chat translation AI does not alter the platform's privacy and safety protocols, ensuring that banned words remain blocked.
