Delving into Wi-Fi 7: Is it worth the upgrade? Explore the advancements and decide if it's the right choice for your connectivity needs.

Prepare for a Wi-Fi evolution! Just four years after the introduction of Wi-Fi 6 and a couple of years post the debut of Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7 is now on the horizon. For someone like me, who began their journey reviewing routers, this is both exciting and exhausting.

In essence, Wi-Fi 7 promises to be a significant leap in speed compared to Wi-Fi 6E, largely due to the expansive 6GHz band that 6E introduced. The new version also aims to employ various techniques to enhance speed, reduce interference, and minimize network latency.

If this sounds familiar, it's because Wi-Fi 6 and 6E also focused on reducing interference and boosting speed. But here's the silver lining: Wi-Fi 7 is designed to be compatible with older devices. So, as you gradually upgrade your gadgets to those supporting the new standard, your network experience should improve.

So, what's the essence of Wi-Fi 7? Think of it as an enhancement to Wi-Fi 6E, similar to how Wi-Fi 6 was an upgrade from Wi-Fi 5. It operates across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands, but with added bandwidth, better bundling across bands, and advanced signal modulation techniques to manage congestion.

While there's a lot of buzz about Wi-Fi 7 supporting 8K video streaming, I'm a bit skeptical. Most modern routers can already handle a compressed 8K stream. The real advantage of Wi-Fi 7 lies in its sheer speed.

Is Wi-Fi 7 genuinely faster? The answer is a resounding yes. Intel suggests that a typical Wi-Fi 7-enabled laptop could achieve speeds close to 5.8Gbps. The primary factor contributing to this speed is the channel bandwidth. Wi-Fi 7 doubles the maximum channel bandwidth, allowing for more data flow.

But when will Wi-Fi 7 be available in our devices? While Wi-Fi 7 routers are already in the market, it's advisable to wait. Only a select few devices currently support the standard, which hasn't been officially finalized.

In conclusion, while the promise of Wi-Fi 7 is enticing, it's still in its early stages. The real benefits will only be realized once manufacturers adopt it as the default, which might take a while.
